A Shropshire business ambassador has attributed Ludlow’s record number of visitors this summer to the town’s new park for touring caravans and motorhomes. Tony Bywater, chairman of Shrewsbury-based Salop Leisure, commended Morris Leisure for the company’s £3 million investment in Ludlow Touring Park, which opened its gates in May and has been a great success.

Tourism chiefs have reported that Ludlow defied the wet summer by attracting a record number of visitors to the town. More than 25,000 people visited Ludlow Tourist Information Centre in August, the highest number recorded since figures began in 2004. Between April and September, more than 100,000 people visited the TIC, the highest figure since 2006.
“I believe that Ludlow has benefited from the investment that Morris Leisure has made in Ludlow Touring Park,” said Mr Bywater. “This five star park has attracted a large number of high quality visitors from across the UK and Europe and they have spent their money in local shops and restaurants.
“It’s great to see Ludlow having such a fantastic tourist season and it would be very interesting to discover where the visitors came from and where they stayed.
“Salop Leisure obviously has a vested interest in the caravan industry in Shropshire but we believe that our caravans and motorhomes play a key role in attracting tourists to our county.”
When Ludlow Touring Park opened, Morris Leisure’s managing director Edward Goddard predicted that it would generate around £2 million a year for the local economy.
The 135-pitch park has recently been accepted as a prestigious affiliated site of The Caravan Club. There are only 206 caravan parks across the UK that are either owned by or affiliated to the club, which provides high quality services to one million caravan and motor caravan owners.
The 20-acre park is situated alongside the River Teme with good road links to the A49 near Richards Castle and just a short drive from the Ludlow town centre.
