Severn Valley steps up its 'scary-but-fun' ghost trains

10th October 2012

THE SEVERN Valley Railway is expanding its ‘Halloween season’ of family-friendly Ghost Trains at the end of this month, following the sell-out success of its first dabble into the world of ghouls and ghosts last year.

Fiendishly well-timed to coincide with schools half-term week (from October 20th) and sensitively pitched to ensure they are ‘scary, but fun’, the steam-hauled Ghost Trains will run after-dark on four evenings – Wednesday 24th, Friday 26th, Saturday 27th and on Halloween itself – Wednesday October 31st,  offering a total of  1,200 seats - an increase of 300 on 2011.

Last year’s invitation to families to come in ghoulish-themed fancy dress was enthusiastically taken up by adults as well as children, and is being repeated, with spot-prizes for the most ingenious witches, warlocks and ghouls. A fancy dress parade at Kidderminster station for all those indulging in the harum-scarum will be held between 6pm and 7pm, when the Ghost Train departs on its round-trip to Highley.

Award winning magicians Ron Popple with his pet dragon, and David Oakley with assistant ‘Dennis the dog’ will bamboozle passengers with undetectable sleight-of-hand and sorcery before the ‘off’, and children (aged 2 - 15 years) will each receive a ‘Spooky Surprise’ goodie-bag.

But the railway is keeping dark about what actually happens once the train pulls out, to preserve the element of mystery. There may be a clue however in the fact that ‘apparitions’ were seen at the dark and mysterious 480-yard long Bewdley Tunnel, and at both Bewdley and Arley stations last year. Perhaps they’re still there!

“We’ve devised a programme which is keenly balanced so as to have children on the edge of their seats, but not scared out of their wits” said SVR Visitor Services Manager David Mee today. “At the end of the day, its a fun event, and enjoyment is the main object.”

The Ghost Trains command a flat fare of £8.95 for both adults and children (aged 2 - 15 years), but have to be pre-booked at least five days in advance, via the SVR’s website (, or by telephone on 01299 403816.

Daytime trains throughout half-term week (October 20 – 28th) run at approximately 75-minute intervals, starting from Kidderminster Town at 10.25, and from Bridgnorth at 10.55.
