Shropshire Hills AONB awarded the Europarc status

17th July 2012

This coveted award for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas means that Shropshire Hills joins a select club of protected landscapes across Europe

It has just been announced that the Shropshire Hills AONB has been awarded the Europarc Federation’s Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas.  This achievement is the result of work by partners from local business, public and community organisations to agree a direction for tourism to develop sustainably in the Shropshire Hills. This means that development of tourism will take into account the area’s current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, and address the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.

Phil Holden, Shropshire Hills AONB Partnership Manager, commented “The Charter award helps to give further prominence and weight to the value of the Shropshire Hills and associated towns as a key part of Shropshire’s tourism offer, and will reinforce efforts to ensure that the future development of tourism does not harm the special qualities of the AONB. This achievement recognises the efforts and collaboration of many different organisations.”
