Grab a Curry for Charity this Saturday! The Shrewsbury Big Curry is taking place this Saturday 21 July in The Square to raise money for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.

Following the success of the event last year it will once again be a ‘curry cook-off’ between the Army chefs from 143 (West Midlands) Brigade and the civilian chefs from the TASTE kitchen at the Shropshire Food Enterprise Centre.

The two will go head to head and battle it out to see who gains the most public votes and is crowned as having the tastiest curry. For a £5 donation to the charity you will receive a portion of each curry with rice and then you get to cast your vote for your favourite curry.

The Shrewsbury Big Curry will run from 12pm - 4pm and is hoping to top last year’s figure of £7,500 for the Soldiers’ Charity which gives lifetime support to serving and retired soldiers and their families.  In 2011 The Soldiers’ Charity assisted 32 injured and wounded soldiers in Shropshire and the West Midlands by funding vocational training courses for their transition to life outside the Army at a cost of £38,350.  In addition The Soldiers’ Charity was able to give £55,543.73 to support 60 individual cases and one charity in order to help soldiers and their families in Shropshire when they needed it most.

The Shrewsbury Big Curry is being organised by Nick Chavasse, Managing Director of NRG Direct Mail Ltd, a former Major in the British Army with support from HEART of ENGLAND fine foods (HEFF) and Shropshire Council.

Richard Hackett, The Soldiers’ Charity Regional Director for the West Midlands said: “We need the public’s support again this year as we urgently need to raise funds to support wounded and injured soldiers during their rehabilitation at the Personnel Recovery Unit in Shrewsbury.

“I would urge the public to come along and support this event by having a curry for their lunch and helping us to raise money.  There will be a licensed bar, music and stands for local businesses supporting the event so it promises to be another great event.”
